Фотографот Пол Никлен снимил срцепарателно видео на канадскиот Бафинов остров. Поранешниот биолог видел над 3 илјади мечки во дивината, но оваа, како што изјавил тој, никогаш нема да ја заборави.  “Стоевме таму и плачевме, снимавме додека солзи нѝ се тркалаа по образите”, рекол Никлен. Хранењето на поларните мечки во Канада е нелегално, но и да се случело тоа, односно екипата на Никлен да била во можност да ја нахрани прегладнетата мечка, тоа би било само одлагање на неизбежното.

There was no saving this individual bear. People think that we can put platforms in the ocean or we can feed the odd starving bear. The simple truth is this—if the Earth continues to warm, we will lose bears and entire polar ecosystems. This large male bear was not old, and he certainly died within hours or days of this moment. But there are solutions. We must reduce our carbon footprint, eat the right food, stop cutting down our forests, and begin putting the Earth—our home—first. Топењето на мразот поради климатските промени има директно влијание врз хранењето и преживувањето на поларните мечки. На нив им се потребни ледените плочи со цел да можат да дојдат до својата храна која се наоѓа под нив.

This week I posted a video of a starving bear. It was difficult to film, and even harder to watch, as evidenced by the reactions it elicited. The truth is hard, but photojournalism is more than pretty pictures. It can be a difficult job. Journalism exposes—raw and without bias—the world’s issues in the interest of transparency, honesty and, I believe, change for the better. At @Sea_Legacy, we want to break down the walls of apathy and move people to change. We went to the Canadian Arctic to document the effects of climate change. We found the good, the bad and the ugly, but mostly just beautiful animals and landscapes we want to protect.
